چکیده

Interest in extending the high cycle fatigue life of structures has increased in the last decade of the 20th century. Since a long fatigue life depends on keeping cyclic loads near or below the fatigue threshold, understanding near-threshold behavior is now all the more important. This paper reviews the status of the ‘threshold of fatigue’ and to a lesser extent its relation to the ‘fatigue limit’. The fatigue threshold for crack propagation is not a single number. And, when it appears expressed in crack propagation equations as DKth, it is usually involved with crack closure. To explore what it is, the published information on near-threshold fatigue crack growth is reviewed here with emphasis on current trends. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is the formalism used, but effects such as overload are difficult to explain using a purely elastic model. A single threshold stress intensity range is inadequate to explain the effects of the stress ratio. Concepts of crack closure, shielding and closure-induced shielding have been introduced, leading to the emergence of dual-parameter threshold models. Interpretation of these models has revived debate about the physical significance of crack closure because contributions to fatigue crack growth have been observed from portions of the loading cycle taking place while the crack is closed. In seeking alternatives to closure, fatigue mechanisms based on dislocation generation, residual stresses and microstructural stress singularities have recently been elucidated to supplement work advancing the understanding of what is termed partial closure.  1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Probability Approach for Prediction of Pitting Corrosion Fatigue Life of Custom 450 Steel

In this study, the pitting type of corrosion growth characteristics, fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior; axial fatigue tests were carried out on precipitation hardened martensitic Custom 450 steel in the air and 3.5wt% NaCl solution. Using the ratio of the depth to the half-width of the pits; (a/c)= 1.5±0.2 the corrosion pit depth growth law was obtained as a function of stress a...

Accelerated Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth Effect – Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Alloy

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) research conducted in the near threshold regime has identified a room temperature creep crack growth damage mechanism for a fine grain powder metallurgy (PM) aluminum alloy (8009). At very low ∆K, an abrupt acceleration in room temperature FCG rate occurs at high stress ratio (R = Kmin/Kmax). The near threshold accelerated FCG rates are exacerbated by increased levels...

Analyses of Fatigue Crack Growth and Closure Near Threshold Conditions for Large-Crack Behavior

A plasticity-induced crack-closure model was used to study fatigue crack growth and closure in thin 2024-T3 aluminum alloy under constant-R and constant-Kmax threshold testing procedures. Two methods of calculating crack-opening stresses were compared. One method was based on contact-K analyses and the other on contact crack-openingdisplacement (COD) analyses. These methods gave nearly identica...

MICROSTRUCTURE VARIATION EFFECTS ON ROOM TEMPERATURE FATIGUE THRESHOLDS AND CRACK PROPAGATION IN UDIMET 720Li Ni-BASE SUPERALLOY

An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue threshold and crack propagation behaviour has been carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, i.e. as-received U720Li, U720Li-LG (large grain variant) and U720Li-LP (large intragranular coherent γ′ variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature using a 20Hz sinusoidal cycling waveform at an Rratio=0...

Near-threshold fatigue crack growth in bulk metallic glass composites

A major drawback in using bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) as structural materials is their extremely poor fatigue performance. One way to alleviate this problem is through the composite route, in which second phases are introduced into the glass to arrest crack growth. In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior of in situ reinforced BMGs with crystalline dendrites, which are tailored to impa...
